While taking to the roads of the continent may be a temptation for those choosing where to go on their summer vacation, should they opt for this type of holiday it is crucial for drivers to make sure that they are protected, it has been stated.
In research carried out by Sheilas Wheels, it was indicated that a significant number of Britons are looking to go on a driving holiday across Europe this year. According to the insurance firm, over 4.3 million consumers are planning on taking their vehicle to the continent over the course of this summer, while more than 1.5 million of these will be going away for a day trip or for a long weekend. And although such journeys may not be the thrill-seeking adventures as made famous in Jack Kerouac’s bestselling novel On The Road, the firm regardless urged drivers to ensure they are safe while away.
Research from the insurance provider revealed that two-thirds of motorists are worried about being involved in an accident when abroad, while just under half are apprehensive about the prospect of driving on the opposite side of the road than is the case in Britain. Meanwhile, being unable to ask for directions due to not knowing the local language and having to manage with unfamiliar traffic rules and regulations were also revealed to be major areas of concern for drivers.
In addition, it was reported that over half of British motorists drive illegally while away. These drivers, it was stated, do not have a GB sticker on display, carry a warning triangle or have headlamp adjustments while abroad.
By not having a sufficient level of cover, however, drivers could find that they have to dip into their own pockets and purses in order to meet the cost of repairs to their vehicle. As such, this might have an impact upon their capacity to meet other commitments on their spending upon their return home which could include areas such as making repayments on personal loans, mortgages and household bills.

It is also vital that motorists understand the basic rules and regulations for driving on foreign roads and be fully prepared by planning their journeys, carrying the essential equipment and giving their car a maintenance check before setting off.”
