Jersey sees rise in debt calls
The Jersey Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) received more calls relating to debt management issues than any other problem in 2006, it has emerged.
In its annual report, the bureau reveals some 1,592 debt management concerns were brought to its attention over the course of the year as consumers struggle to make Personal loan repayments.
This represents more than one in ten of the 14,276 problems dealt with by the CAB in 2006, according to the figures.
Meanwhile, the bureau claims that UK consumer debt is "a more serious problem than ever" following the publication of statistics by the Legal Services Commission which show some £1.1 trillion of debt is now owed nationwide.
"The average debt of clients using the CAB debt advice service was £26,000 [in 2006]," the annual report continues.
It was previously reported that consumers in Guernsey are facing record debt problems with average debt of more than £50,000 each.
