Report Suggests Mistruths Might Leave Motorists At Risk

Report Suggests Mistruths Might Leave Motorists At RiskThe lies that drivers tell to their insurance providers could come back to haunt them, it has been suggested.

Recently-released findings by price comparison site Insurance shows that just over a quarter (26 per cent) of motorists admit they have told a mistruth when applying for cover in an attempt to cut costs. A tenth of respondents were indicated as claiming that they park their car in a more secure place than is actually the case. Meanwhile, one out of 20 are secretive about how much their vehicle is worth, with one per cent being lying about any penalty points or criminal convictions that they may have.

Furthermore, it was indicated that a significant number of people view insurance fraud as not being a particularly serious offence. Some 44 per cent of those surveyed put telling lies on applications for cover on the same level as misdemeanors such as stealing a bar of chocolate.

However, should they be caught with in an invalid insurance policy, drivers may find that they have to meet the cost of any repairs or maintenance work to their vehicle by themselves. This might place strains on other areas of their finances such as loans, credit and store cards and household bills.

Overall, young drivers were indicated as being the biggest liars. Around one out of three motorists between the ages of 16 and 24 say that they have told a mistruth, with a fifth of these being dishonest about where they park their vehicle overnight and one in seven not divulging the true value of their automobile. Those driving “executive” and “hot hatchback” models were found to be most likely to be dishonest. Meanwhile, men are the more likely to tell mistruths.

Steve Grainger, head of the price comparison site, said: “Lying to an insurer is often considered to be a ‘victimless crime’ but this is far from the truth. Many motorists would never dream of illegally driving without insurance but they seem to be blissfully unaware that entering inaccurate information on a motor insurance application could make their policy worthless, leaving themselves and those around them at considerable risk. Although it’s natural to want to get the cheapest quote you can, this should never be done at the expense of cover.”

When on the lookout for a new vehicle, those consumers looking for an effective way in which to make a purchase might wish to consider taking out a personal loan. By doing so, drivers might be able to get their car of their dreams and put money towards expenses such as MOT and petrol quickly and effectively. In addition, the financial assistance that a loan provides could help motorists to take out a comprehensive motor insurance policy. A personal loan might also be of help to those looking to take to the wheel for the first time. Recent research by uSwitch revealed that the typical Briton will spend more than 1,300 pounds on learning how to drive, with costs for the average woman rising to about 1,600 pounds.
