Study Shows Older People Look To Rock Out At Festivals
With one the world’s most famous music festivals kicking off this weekend, you may be forgiven for thinking that Glastonbury will be filled with teenage revellers and those who are in their 20s. However, a recent study by Alliance & Leicester indicates that this may not be the case.
Research carried out by the financial services firm revealed that older people are set to take up a significant proportion of those attending the Somerset festival this year. Indeed it appears that many consumers of advancing years enjoy going to see their favourite singers and bands. Alliance & Leicester showed that more than four million people over the age of 50 like to attend gigs and other live events during their spare time. It also appears that women in particular enjoying rocking out to their favourite bands, with about a quarter (24 per cent) of females in this age group said to regularly attend gigs, in comparison to 18 per cent of men.

In addition the study showed those living in London are most likely to go to a gig. A reported one in four of over-50s in the capital claim to enjoy spending spare time watching bands. On the other hand 14 per cent of people in the north-east were indicated as going to concerts.
Research from the firm indicated that Britons over the age of 50 are also looking to go scuba diving and 4×4 off-road driving. Furthermore older people were shown to be keen to fly a helicopter and perform on stage.
Emma Walkley, current account manager for Alliance & Leicester, said: “Those attending Glastonbury this year will find themselves being entertained by the golden oldies, with Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond and even Shakin’ Stevens making an appearance. Not only are the over-50s taking over the line-ups at festivals but they are also making up a large proportion of the crowds - which just goes to show more and more over-50s have ambitions to enjoy exciting challenges and experiences well into later life.”
She went on to report that attending festival and gigs “can make a significant dent in the finances so it’s important for people to look for ways to make their money stretch further”. The manager stated that it is especially crucial for consumers to do this over the summer months, reporting that this time of year will see account balances “take a hit” regardless to how old consumers are.
